The Green Building is all about providing a space for businesses to grow and flourish, so when we were looking at getting professional input to the design of the interior space we approached Leeds Beckett's for advice on getting new graduates and recent alumni involved. Three design teams were shortlisted and commissioned to design an inspirational and desirable workspace hub for aspiring businesses, making the most of the building’s distinctive appearance and features, and drawing on best practices from modern workspace designs to foster interaction and a sense of community as well as providing productive and professional surroundings. It’s fair to say we were blown away by the quality of the designs submitted, and the judging process was incredibly difficult. Formerly known as Hem House, The Green Building started life in the 1970s as a purpose-built manufacturing and warehouse space with ancillary offices. The unusual design with its distinctive shape and angled glazing led to it being nicknamed by locals as ‘the greenhouse’. Over the years, the building has housed stationery suppliers, interior designers, construction consultancies and office furniture manufacturing. After lying empty for some time, the building began to fall into disrepair. Fortunately, its amazing potential was spotted, and it now has a new lease of life as a shared office space, designed for the growing number of new small businesses in Leeds.
